Topic: The Changing Face of Migrant Neighborhoods in Germany

Urban areas heavily populated by certain migrant groups—often referred to with terms like "migrant quarters," "ethnic neighborhoods," "colonies," or "ghettos"—were typically seen as low-value zones. In these neighborhoods, historic buildings had fallen into disrepair, shops had closed down, and a negative image had taken hold.

However, in recent years, a remarkable transformation has been taking place. Thanks to comprehensive renovation and revitalization efforts, the face of these neighborhoods has changed, and their value has started to rise.

But who are the actors behind this transformation? Why are investments being made in these neighborhoods?

In his doctoral research, Dr. Mehmet Çelik examined the actors, motivations, and social impacts of this transformation in eight cities across Germany. This talk will explore this new wave of development and the dynamics behind it.
