Sümer GÜREL,Prof. Dr. (1933- 2018)
Graduated from the Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Istanbul in 1958. He has become the teaching assistant in the same department. As an architect and urban planner he has an international and national professional experience. Between 1959-1964, took part in important projects in Germany, Denmark, Britain and Netherlands. Joined to the METU Department of City and Regional Planning in 1964 as full-time instructor. Worked at METU until 1971. Taught “Introduction to City Planning” course at the same department. As one of the publications of the Faculty of Architecture, his book “Kent Planlamaya Giriş ve Çevre Kavramı” [Introduction to City Planning and the Concept of Environment] provided a theoretical base for the newly established department. Attented SPURS Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received the Sertificate of City and Regional Planning between 1971-1972. Received PhD from Istanbul Technical University In 1973. Gave lectures at the Aarhus School of Architecture between 1972-1975. Served as the founding chairperson of the Department of City and Regional Planning at Ege University (1975-1980). He has become professor in 1980. Taugt at Dokuz Eylül University, Department of City and Regional Planning. Conducted Mekke Master Planning studies (1984-1986). Taught courses at King Saud University and has been elected as Agha Han Visiting Professor at Karachi Dawood College (1989-1992). 1992 onwards, worked as full-time instructor at Mimar Sinan University, Department of City and Regional Planning, in İstanbul.
