Ayşe GEDİK, Prof. Dr. (retired in January 2006)
During her graduate studies (1968-1971) at the Department of City and Regional Planning at METU, she served as a student-assistant. After obtaining her Master's degree, she worked as a Teaching Assistant from 1971 to 1973. She pursued her doctoral studies at the University of Washington (Seattle), where she graduated in 1977. During her doctoral education, she received scholarships from Carnegie Mellon (1973-74) and the Ford Foundation (1976-77) and worked as an Associate Teaching Assistant. As a postdoctoral researcher, she worked at the University of Tsukuba (Japan, 1978-80) through the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Ohio State University, Columbus (USA, 1981-83).
She was appointed as an Assistant Professor at METU in 1985, became an Associate Professor in 1988, and a full Professor in 1994. While at METU, she received various awards and research fellowships and visited universities abroad as a Visiting Faculty Member: Meawards (1986), Institute of Developing Economies (Japan, 1993), Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences (Japan, 1994), Japan Foundation (1997-98), Australian National University, Canberra (Australia, 1994), University of Tsukuba (2005), and Mirekoç (Koç University, 2007).
Since 1971-73 and from 1985 onwards, GEDİK has been serving as a faculty member in our department. She teaches CP371 Planning Methods and Techniques, CP423 Computer Application of Statistical Methods and Techniques to City and Regional Planning, CP425 Computer Application of Demographic Techniques to Turkish Data, CP524 Computer Application of Advanced Statistical Methods to City and Regional Planning, and CP564 National Distribution of Urban Population. She has written several articles, book chapters, monographs, and papers on the comparative analysis of migration and the spatial distribution of population in Turkey and Japan, and their relationship with national levels of development.
